Important Information About Outdoor Teak Furniture
How Teak Furniture Weathers: Your teak furniture will look polished when you first assemble it (be careful to follow assembly instructions). This polished look is created by oil that stays below the surface giving the teak wood its durability. This oil will be absorbed and evaporated after a few days outside. When assembly of your new teak patio furniture piece is completed you should lightly wipe it down with a damp cloth to clean away dust that may remain from the manufacturing process. When teak furniture is left outdoors it weathers to an attractive silver-gray over the course of about nine months. While your outdoor teak furniture is weathering you may see a small lifting of the grain or even a few small cracks on the top edges of the furnitures arm and legs. This is a normal process because wood contracts and expands a little when left outside in the elements. Once the original weather process is complete the grain will regain its smooth finish and this process does not affect the durability of the furniture. You can help your furniture to return to its smooth finish by cleaning it with a sponge or soft bristled brush. Small discolorations or water spots may also be visible during the weathering process but dont worry they will level out and your teak will attain the consistent silver-gray finish youve been waiting for.
How to Clean Your Teak Patio Furniture: Occasional cleaning is the only maintenance your fine backyard teak furniture will need. This can be accomplished using a mixture of four parts laundry detergent or dish washer soap and one part bleach in water. To cleanse your teak simply apply this solution using a soft bristled brush. Rinse the entire furniture piece when you are done to eliminate the remaining cleaning mixture and dirt. Teak cleaners can also be purchased should your furniture
need deeper cleaning due to stains.
The use of oil on OUTDOOR teak furniture is NOT RECOMMENDED due to the involved process required to clean and reapply the oil. In addition, oiling of outdoor teak may result in uneven coloring or mildewing.
